A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

A Northern Light (Borders edition)Mattie is a young girl working at a camp to earn money for college in NY. She has lost her mother and is forced to work the farm and household for her father and her siblings. While working at the camp, she experiences a death of a young lady who had given Mattie a package of letters to burn for her. Mattie can not force herself to burn these letters, feeling there is something important in them.
Mattie has an absolute love of writing and words. She chooses a new word from the dictionary each day and tries to find a way to use that word as the day progresses. Her best friend, Weaver, a young black man and she banter all day with words.
This is a poignant story about a young woman facing many life changes including prejudice, absolute greed and selfishness beyond measure. Well written and worth the read.
