Great Philosophy

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..."-Dr. Seuss

Sea Glass by Anita Shreve

542707

Sexton is a salesman who sells typewriters and Copiograph machines. He goes to his bank and falls in love with the teller, Honora. They end up marrying and moving into an abandoned house on the beach in New Hampshire.

Vivian is a well-to-do woman who likes to party and ends up involved with Dickie, although their relationship is less formal.

Alphonse is a young boy who works at the mills in Ely Falls. There are many children that are working to help support families.

McDermott is a strike organizer and is attempting to get the workers to join a union for better wages and benefits.

These people all come together, haphazardly. The personalities are all very different, but when they end up together working to unionize the mill workers, we glimpse the way people are drawn to each other, no matter what the difference in personalities.

Honora is a collector of sea glass and has a platter full of all the pieces that she has collected. Very symbolic of the collection of characters in this novel.

Anita Shreve passed away this year, so I don't believe her website is available.
